Philippians 3:20 assures believers that “our citizenship is in heaven,” while Jesus teaches us to pray that the Father’s kingdom would come and His will would be done “on earth, as it is in heaven.”
Taken together, these verses provide the basis for “biblical citizenship,” the idea that while our citizenship transcends the temporal kingdoms of men, believers should resist indifference to earthly matters and instead seek to extend the City of God into the world around us.
That is a high calling, and one we should not take lightly.
“The heavenly city isn’t static,” writes Peter J. Leithart in On Earth as in Heaven: Theopolis Fundamentals. “It’s not merely placed in the world among the cities and nations of men. God established His city among the cities of men to redeem those human cities. Jesus commissioned the church to disciple nations. He established His city to engage in an urban renewal project.”
That “urban renewal project” is at the heart of Patriot Academy’s Biblical Citizenship course, which launched earlier this month and offers to help joint citizens of heaven and America “operationalize” their faith in the arid religious landscape of modernity. Convention of States Foundation is proud to partner with Patriot Academy to promote this eight-week series of classes on the Constitution, America’s biblical heritage, and urgent opportunities for Christians to get involved in the fight for liberty.
The course features timely insights from the late Turning Point USA Founder Charlie Kirk, actor Kirk Cameron, David and Tim Barton of WallBuilders, and more. Grassroots activist Mark Meckler will join the program live on November 30.

Americans often lament (for good reason) the steep decline in civic literacy; we should be even more concerned about the collapse of biblical literacy. As citizens of heaven, our highest allegiance belongs not to the government, but to God. We are ultimately answerable not to a president or politician, but to the King of kings. And the supreme law of His domain is the Bible.
God’s Word was designed to dictate every facet of our lives, including how we interact with the polity. If we want to be upstanding citizens of heaven — if we want to be biblical citizens — we must read God’s lawbook regularly and apply His commandments as widely as possible.
Everything from our political views to how we serve in our communities should fall under Christ’s jurisdiction. Biblical Citizenship by Patriot Academy teaches us to reexamine our responsibilities as American citizens in light of eternal authority. For anyone seeking a reliable blueprint for rebuilding the cities of men, a map to guide them through the chaos of modern politics, or a closer walk with the God who reigns over nations, Biblical Citizenship offers a valuable education.
